The Ferrocontrol E°Darc C16Wi is the spindle controller with standstill monitor of the Ci generation in the 16 A power class from the E°Darc C drive system by Ferrocontrol (Eckelmann). It operates on the 560 V DC link of an E°Darc Pxx supply module, controls current, speed and position fully digitally and drives the feed and positioning axes as well as milling spindles with asynchronous motors in window and profile machining centres.

For machine operators

Function within the E°Darc system
The control uses FPGA technology: current, speed and position controllers are computed in parallel, which gives high dynamics and good machining quality. The switching frequency can be selected in four steps. The option cards plug into the top of the unit: two encoder modules (slots A and B) and one fieldbus module (slot C), usually CANopen in window-making machinery. Setpoints and diagnostics travel via the fieldbus to the machine control; commissioning and diagnostics are carried out with E°Tools Drive. Extensive monitoring – short circuit, overvoltage, temperature, encoder, following error and I²t – protects controller and motor.

Spindle controller with safe standstill monitor
The W version is intended for asynchronous motors such as milling spindles. It combines the standard safety module (STO) with a safe standstill monitor: the double-width SinCos SSW encoder module occupies both encoder slots, evaluates a SinCos encoder on the spindle and reports standstill and self-test to the machine’s safety controller via two-channel 24 V outputs (SIL 2 with approved encoders). This means the guard may only be opened once the spindle has safely stopped.

Device generation E°Darc Ci
The i version is the current generation of the E°Darc C controllers and the intended replacement for the older E°Darc C devices. It no longer has an SD card: firmware and parameter sets are transferred with the firmware and parameter management of E°Tools Light. CANopen or EtherCAT can be chosen as fieldbus; the fieldbus modules of the Ci generation are mechanically not compatible with those of the old C controllers, and the matching module is supplied with the replacement unit. The plug-on E°SCD operating unit is required to set the CAN address and bit rate and to confirm the safety configuration.
